I was born on 09 February 1963 in the rural village of Sekhukhune, province of Limpopo in South Africa. I am the fourth child in a family of nine children and one passed away in 2009. I am also married with four (4) children. Life in the rural village in one of the poorest regions of South Africa was quite difficult and uninspiring however, I had the benefit of an educated father, who was a school teacher so he fought hard to educate all of us in the family and therefore we ended up having three doctors, one also the Minister of Home Affairs in the current government, an attorney, three teachers, and I am a mining engineer having obtained a certificate in engineering and a mining engineering degree in Canada, in 1995. I am also a product of the liberation struggle during the apartheid South Africa. In 1984 at the height of mass action including student uprisings in high schools and universities across the country, I fled the country to join the African National Congress (ANC) in exile. There I continued my education at Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College (SOMAFCO). In 1988 after completing matric I went to Canada on a speaking tour together with two other students from the same college. We had been invited by the Inter-Church Coalition on Africa led by the United Church of Canada and the aim was to educate Canadians about the plight of young people and students in South Africa under Apartheid. At the end of the three-week tour I remained in Canada and assisted in the ANC office in Toronto until I obtained a scholarship to study in Canada. I studied at the University of Alberta in Calgary, Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, and finally obtained a mining engineering degree at the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS) which later merged with Dalhousie University. I returned to South Africa for the first time after spending years in exile in 1994 under amnesty and in 1995 I settled permanently in the country. I worked for Anglo-American as a Junior Mining Engineer, Department of Minerals and Energy as a Senior Inspector of Mines, Lafarge South Africa as the Senior Mineral and Health and Safety Manager, Namane Resources as the General Manager Mining, and in October 2011 I joined Ivanplats as a Senior Mining Engineer based at head office in sandton. I later moved to the
operations in Mokopane as a site manager before I became a Head of Department of Sustainability. This month, I have just completed 10 years in Social performance working with stakeholders and government.
